Lal Bhatia, widely recognized for his powerful memoir Indicting Goliath and his long battle for justice in the United States, has turned his attention to an important social cause in India. Bhatia and his team have installed sanitary napkin vending machines in girls’ schools and colleges across West Bengal, using the proceeds from his book to fund this crucial project.
For many young girls in West Bengal, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, access to sanitary napkins is limited. This can result in poor menstrual hygiene, leading to health issues and absenteeism from school. Bhatia’s initiative seeks to address this problem by ensuring that sanitary napkins are available through vending machines placed in educational institutions. These machines offer affordable sanitary products, making it easier for girls to manage their menstrual health with dignity.
The installation of these vending machines is part of a broader effort to improve public health and support the well-being of young girls. By providing access to sanitary napkins, Bhatia is helping to reduce the stigma around menstruation and empower girls to take control of their health.
Bhatia has also been involved in other charitable activities. During the recent Durga Puja festival, he and his team distributed thousands of face masks to promote public safety during the pandemic. He has also been engaged in food distribution efforts, supporting families in need across Kolkata.
